1. The Idea
You can’t solve your problem of not being happy by working more. Work runs downhill from joy and energy. Those come first, upstream.

3. Why This Matters to You
When a paper gets rejected or a grant fails, the reflex is to write another one, longer and later into the night. If the thought is right, that reflex makes things worse. Tired, joyless work shows up as flat writing, thin ideas and short patience with your students. Your best reviews, lectures and supervision meetings come from the days you arrive with energy. So protecting sleep, friendships and the parts of research you love is part of the job.
4. Counter Viewpoint
Yet for many academics, the work itself is the source of joy. Cracking a hard problem or seeing a paper accepted can lift a bad month. Some unhappiness also comes from real deadlines, and doing the work is what removes the weight. Perhaps the river runs both ways, and you rarely know which direction you are standing in.
