1. The Idea
If you are not burning out and you know you want to work, then work. Do not hold back just because someone around you says you need to take it easy. Putting in the work now makes your future easier.

“Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.”
Theodore Roosevelt
3. Why This Matters to You
Academic careers compound. A paper you finish this year can collect citations for a decade, and a grant you win now funds the student who writes your next three papers. The hours you put in during a doctorate or a postdoc build the skills and the track record that hiring and tenure committees read. If you have the energy and the drive, slowing down to match someone else’s pace costs you time you cannot easily win back. You get to decide what a sustainable load looks like for you.
4. Counter Viewpoint
Burnout rarely announces itself. Many academics who crashed felt fine until the week they did not, and the colleague who told them to slow down had seen it coming. Your long hours also set a norm that your students and junior colleagues may feel they have to match. Yet a well-meant warning can just as easily hold back someone who is thriving. The hard part is knowing whose read on your limits to trust, yours or theirs.
